This is a variation from the nude a few days ago, and a study for a larger canvas to come.
Dieser Akt ist eine Variation zu dem Akt vor ein paar Tagen, und eine Studie für ein größeres Bild.
Bricks and Mortar

My studio is being redecorated at the moment. I rented the adjacent flat next to my old studio, so now they are emerged into one. Walls are taken away, new cables are led, pipes, dandelions, waterfalls, the whole works. Every day I come so see how the work is going on. Watching busy workmen, talking in many different languages which unfortunately I cannot understand a single one of, but I take my sketchbook with me, so today´s painting is from my very own building-site.
Mein Atelier wird im Moment umgebaut. Ich habe die Nachbarwohnung neben meinem Atelier dazu gemietet. und jetzt wird aus beiden eins gemacht, Wände werden entfernt, neue Kabel verlegt, Rohre, Kletterpflanzen, Wasserfälle usw. und so fort. Jeden Tag komme ich und schaue mir den Fortschritt an, beobachte dann die Arbeiter, die alle in verschiedenen Sprachen reden, keine davon kann ich leider verstehen, aber ich habe mein Skizzenbuch dabei, das heutige Bild ist also von dieser meiner Baustelle.

I have in my studio quite a collection of costumes, coats and dresses, which I occassionally pick up at stalls, theatre sales, and of course in my favoured brick a brack Chinese stores. When starting work with a new model today, I decided she put on this blue Chinese style dress, well in real its plastic and not silk I suppose, but I tried to paint silk anyway.
Ich habe in meinem Atelier eine Sammlung von Kostümen, Mänteln, Kleider welche ich hier und dort gekauft habe, auf dem Markt, bei Fundus Verkäufen im Theater und natürlich bei meinen geliebten Chinesen Läden. Als ich heute die Arbeit mit einem neuem Modell begann, dachte ich mir es wäre schön sie in diesem blauen Seidenkleid zu malen, natürlich ist das keine Seide, Plastik nehme ich mal an, aber ich versuchte es so zu malen daß es wie Seide aussieht.

To be quite honest with you, I had my doubts about publishing today´s painting… somehow I was not in top form today, but you will be my judge….
Um ganz ehrlich zu sein, ich hatte große Zweifel das heutige Bild hier zu veröffentlichen, ich war nicht in so guter Form heute, aber das könnt Ihr am besten beurteilen ….

To see musicians to become one with their instrument, when the instrument starts to sing, this mixture of complete passion, love and aloofness, that is for me the greatest hour, the triumph of art. This sketch of a cello player is only a gesture of what I mean with these thoughts.
Musiker mit ihrem Instrument eins werdend zu sehen, wenn das Instrument anfängt zu singen, diese Mischung aus Leidenschaft, Liebe und Abgeklärtheit, das sind für mich große Momente, die Sternstunden der Kunst. Diese Skizze einer Cello Spielerin ist nur ein kleiner Ausdruck davon, was ich mit diesen Gedanken meine.

When starting a portrait, I like to do separate studies of the hands of the person to be painted. If this person recognises the hands, I know that I am getting somewhere…
Wenn ich ein Portrait beginne, mache ich auch separate Studien der Hände des Modells. Wenn sich die Person anhand der Hände erkennt, weiß ich, daß ich auf dem richtigen Weg bin….
