Vor meinem Atelier in Berlin befindet sich ein großer Platz aus Betonplatten, der als Park und Wendeplatz für Autos und Lkws, aber auch immer wieder als Kulisse für meine Bilder dient. Das Abendlicht im Sommer ist hier immer ganz zauberhaft.
In front of my studio in Berlin is a large square made of concrete slabs, which serves as a parking and turning area for cars and trucks, but also from time to time as a backdrop for my paintings. The evening light in summer is always very magical here.

Sommer auf der Museumsinsel in Berlin. Im Laufe der letzten 17 Jahre habe ich hier schon so einige Eindrücke gemalt.

Morgens um halb sieben

Morgens um halb sieben an der Spree in Oberschöneweide. Der Fluss hat nahezu keine Strömung. Glatt wie ein Spiegel. Vereinzelt sieht man Hunde am Ufer, die ihre noch müden Menschen an der Leine nach sich ziehen. Die Enten nehmen ein Sonnenbad, und die Boote schaukeln noch leise vor sich hin im Schlaf. Von ganz weiten hört man die Räder der S-Bahn, klak klak, klak klak, klak klak, immer im gleichen Rhythmus, kurz lang, kurz lang, kurz lang. Der Beginn eines herrlichen Sommertages.
6:30 in the morning at the Spree in Oberschöneweide. The river has almost no current. Smooth as a mirror. Occasionally one sees dogs on the bank, pulling their still tired people on the leash after them. The ducks are sunbathing and the boats are still rocking softly in their sleep. From far away you can hear the wheels of the S-Bahn, clack clack, clack clack, clack clack, always in the same rhythm, short long, short long, short long. The beginning of a beautiful summer day.

Das war doch mal wieder ein herrlicher Sommertag heute.

Aus der Perspektive einer Katze

Für mich wirken teile des Gartens schon wie ein kleiner Dschungel. Aber ich fragte mich heute, wie sieht das wohl für meine Katze aus? Also legte ich mich auf den Boden, und malte aus dieser tieferen Perspektive, was mir allerdings unverständlich Blicke meiner Katze bescherte.
For me, parts of the garden look like a small jungle. But I asked myself today, what does it look like for my cat? So I lay down on the floor and painted from this deeper perspective, which, however, gave me strange looks from my cat.
Das weiße Gartenzelt

Das weiße Gartenzelt, das aber eigentlich nicht mehr sehr weiß ist. Auch die Konstruktion ist schon etwas verbogen, durch herunterfallende Äste. Noch ein paar Jahre, und es wird ganz harmonisch in das Gesamtbild passen.
The white garden tent, which is actually not very white anymore. The construction is also a bit warped due to falling branches. A few more years and it will fit harmoniously into the overall picture.

Teile des Gartens sind mittlerweile so verwildert, dass es im Sommer ganz dunkel ist, und nur noch durch einige Stellen das Licht durchkommt. Das ist dann aber (für mich) umso schöner, da hier fast das Licht so gesetzt wird, wie in einem Theater.
Parts of the garden are now so overgrown that it is rather dark during the summer and the light only comes through a few places. But that’s all the more beautiful (for me) because the light is set almost like in a theatre.
Der Garten der Malerin

Als meine Mutter dieses Stückchen Land 1999 bezog, gab es dort nur ein paar alte Eichenbäume und Gras. Kündigte sich Besuch an, so konnte man den schon eine Woche vorher am Horizont sehen. Dann tauschte sie ihre Farben, Leinwände, Pinsel und Stifte gegen Spaten, Gummistiefel, Schubkarre und Gießkannen ein. Die Linien ihrer neuen Zeichnungen waren Bambusgräser, Birken und Obstbäume, die Perspektive wurde zu einer Allee, Flächen und Formen wurden zu Büschen und Blättern, die Farben ihrer Palette wurden zu den prächtigen Blüten der Rhododendren, der Rosen und Lilien, des Löwenzahns und Lavendel. Es füllt mein Herz mit tiefer Demut und großer Freude, das jetzt alles 24 Jahre später, malen zu dürfen.
When my mother set eyes on this piece of land in 1999, there were only a few old oak trees and grass. If visitors were announced, you could see them on the horizon a week beforehand. Then she traded her paints, canvases, brushes and pencils for spades, Wellington boots, wheelbarrows and watering cans. The lines of her new drawings were bamboo grasses, birches and fruit trees, the perspective became an avenue, planes and shapes became bushes and leaves, the colours of her palette became the magnificent blossoms of rhododendrons, roses and lilies, dandelions and lavender. It fills my heart with deep humility and great joy to be able to paint all this 24 years on.
Der Apfelbaum

Ganz hinten in meinem Garten steht ein alter Apfelbaum. Teilweise ist sein Stamm ganz mit Moos bedeckt. Vor ein paar Jahren brach ein großer Teil des Baumes einfach ab. Das, was übrig blieb, blüht jedes Jahr im Frühling erneuert in voller Pracht. Die Äpfel im Herbst sind ganz wunderbar.
There is an old apple tree in the back of my garden. Its trunk is partially covered with moss. A few years ago large part of the tree just broke off. What is left blooms in full bloom every spring. The apples in autumn are wonderful.
