The summer in the north, recognizable by the warmer rain, but sometimes the sun also shines

Samstag

Another painting in the making. The musician Julius Peter Nitsch. I like to watch musicians tune their instrument, especially before a performance. Between the musician and his instrument there is a very special intensity, a tender, concentrated ritual, the last private moment with each other before going out, into the uncertain certainty of the performance.

Freitag

A few weeks ago I was invited to the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. For the first event after the long lockdown. I felt very honored, and was full of anticipation. Life of the city suddenly came back again. Berlin looked like a desert to me, which after a surprising downpour began to bloom and laugh again. Well, the visit was suddenly shorter than planned, but the impressions I went with were, and still are profoundly impressive. Here is a drawing from behind the stage, a plan for a larger piece of work.

Donnerstag

Today I have been painting on this one all day. I wanted to paint a small daily painting, but then I just forgot the time while painting.

Work on this painting actually began back in 2011. I had previously completed a painting with the same model, in the same setting and lighting, and wanted to continue working on a second one, this painting. But somehow the work stopped quickly, and so it lived for years in the ever-growing pile of canvases „I’ll go back to it later“. Last year in January 2020, I started to work on it again, and here it is. „À Chloris“ (the title is inspired by a song by Reynaldo Hahn) Oil on canvas, approx. 110 x 150cm, Berlin 2021

And here the second larger work that was finished during the last few weeks, soon in a private collection.

“A summer day in the studio” Oil on canvas approx. 90 x 120 cm, Berlin 2021

After I landed safely in Berlin with my balloon some time ago, I retired to my studio for a few weeks to work on 3 larger paintings, which I have now all finished, and all three dry in the sunlight of summer in front of the studio window. I’ll show them here over the next few days, before I continue with the daily paintings again.

The first painting is called „The Quote“ Oil on canvas approx. 95 x 140 cm.

(This is not a daily painting, and will not be sold in the usual bidding procedure , thank you)

Im Atelier

Zurück in meiner Werkstatt.

Back in the studio. My model today, was wondering about a small drawing of a balloon on a large, otherwise empty canvas.

Leaving England

One last look back at this enchanting island. It was very nice to be here, even if it was just a dream. But at the moment dreaming is the freedom that is always there, that cannot be restricted by anyone or anything. And that’s really reassuring to know that it’s still possible.

For Tea in Ely

© Edward B. Gordon / 5.9 x 5.9 inch / Oil on MDF / 15 x 15 cm / Öl auf MDF Bord / 4349

„If on your visit to England your fly by Ely, do call on us. You can tie your balloon off on the magnificent Cathedral, and we will treat you to tea and scones with cream in Peacock’s by the river“

And that’s what I am doing now. And meet again the gentleman who introduced me to the work of Noël Coward and the music of Irving Berlin a long time ago in London. (Michael Feinstein sings Irving Berlin is still one of my favorid records )
