Elektrisches Licht

© Edward B. Gordon / 5.9 x 5.9 inch / Oil on MDF / 15 x 15 cm / Öl auf MDF Bord / 4180

Einfach so.

Logisch.

These days, when the world outside never really wants to brighten up a bit, I am very happy about the invention of the electric light.

Of course, this has been around for a very long time. And it is almost everywhere available . But I am still amazed that it just works, just like that. Fantastic !

Right now these artificial light sources are doing a real good job. Even in such an antechamber of the Berlin U-Bahn, the light brings a bit of warmth and homeliness.

But what I’ve always wondered is, where the light actually goes when it’s done.

For example, where do all these lights of the Berlin underground go, when the tube closes its doors during the week, one hour after midnight ? Where are they ?

Is there a last train that only collects these lights?

Does this special train possibly also stops at the Brandenburg Gate or Alexanderplatz, waiting for the lights of the Komische Oper, the State Opera, the Gorki Theater, and so on, so that they are able to join ?

(Although of course, they finished a bit earlier, but they spent some time at the theater bar, an occupational hazard as it its widely known, and made jokes at the expense  of a colleague that suddenly shone blue instead of red tonight, and thus messed up completely the performance of an Opera singer from Salzburg, the poor woman.)

And then, I think, this last carriage, with all the lights, goes to an unknown terminus, just outside Berlin.

Maybe near the Wannsee, where they live in a hidden clearing, far away from prying eyes, these lights of the city.

Of course, the whole thing goes at the speed of light, that’s why no one ever noticed. Logical.
